Serving Documents to the Other Party
Most court processes require that the other people involved in the case are “served” with the papers. This means that the other people involved officially receive the papers and that you can prove to the court that they were received.
“Service” is required so that the other people involved have notice that something has been filed that may affect their rights and that they have the opportunity to attend the hearing to share their perspective.
It is not as simple as just handing the papers to the other person and telling the court that you did it. Official documents are required and turned into the court as proof the other people were served.
